Cancer Care Package

12/23/2015

Unfortunately, cancer is affecting the lives of friends and family across the globe as we speak. It is viscious and relentless. It can come like a thief in the night with no warning or prep time. It can be a slowly progressing battle that subtly gives you hints that it is trying to diminsh your flame and take away your light.

If you have a friend, family member, or coworker who has been affected by cancer is some way, it can be extremely hard to find a way to express your love, concern, and support. What do you do? Do you send food? They are sick and not eating. Do you show up? They are too tired for visitors. The greatest support that can be offered in my book is prayer. And second to that is a care package that will meet their "new needs". Trust me, it will be well-received!

We made this care package festive and fun. All items are directly related to typical needs that arise in cancer patients, mostly due to chemo treatments. Chemo patients typically tend to have dry skin, dry mouth, open sores, hair loss, chills, and naseau. As the embark on this journey, they will begin to see how they need these items and will be so grateful to have them. Let them focus on their treatment, you focus on their care!

Christmas Scripture Matching Game

12/20/2015

It’s so easy to let Christ be the last piece to the puzzle in all of your Christmas planning, especially on Christmas Day. Christ is often the guest we leave at the door rather than inviting Him in!

At our house, we love to host Christmas for the family. Over the past few years, we have started a new tradition that seeks to invite Him in.

We came up with a fun way to present the gospel in the form of a Scripture Verse Matching Game. The goal of the game is to match the correct scripture verse to the correct ornament.

Here’s what you need:
  • 10 gift tags
  • Pen/pencil
  • Ribbon
  • 10 Ornaments

Prep:

Choose 10 verses from the Bible and 10 ornaments to correspond with each verse. You can make this as difficult or as easy as you want. We chose to make this on the easier side, as we have many young kids in the family.

Once you have picked your verses and ornaments, write the verses on each of the gift tags.

Instructions:
  • Divide the children into teams of three and give each team a name. For instance, “The Three Wise Men”, “The Shepherds, or “Bethlehem Bells”. It’s also helpful to mix up the ages of each team so older kids can help the younger ones. If you do not have enough players for multiple teams, you can just play as one team.
  • Place the ornaments on the floor in a vertical line. Place the scripture gift tags in a vertical line to the right of each ornament in a mixed up order so that the scripture verse gift tags do not match the ornament they are next to.
  • Have each team pick a number from 1 -10 to decide which teams goes first.
  • Each team takes a turn (make sure that the other teams are not watching them during their turn). Each team needs to match the scripture verse gift tag to the ornament that best describes the scripture verse. For example, the Proverbs 4:23 gift tag says, “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” This scripture verse matches best to our heart ornament.
  • Give each team a set amount of time to complete their matches. We allowed 2-3 minutes for each team.  Then, take a picture of their results so you can remember what matches they picked.
  • When all teams have taken a turn, refer back to your picture results for each team. Have one person from each team show and describe what their matches were and why they chose the matches they did.

End Game:

After each team has taken their turn, tell them the correct answers and which team had the most right answers.

The team that wins gets to each keep an ornament and it’s corresponding scripture verse that is to be attached to the ornament with ribbon. Encourage them to memorize the scripture verse they chose to keep. Then, the remaining ornaments and corresponding scripture verses can be hung on the tree by all teams.

The kids will have a blast playing this together. They will look forward to it year after year with new verses and new ornaments. Not only will you have a tree full of new ornaments and Bible verses, but your children will remember these verses year after year!
